More Sebastian Brant - Das Narrenschiff Ship of Fools (an English title) is a satire monument of medieval German literature, written by Sebastian Brant (or also Brandt), a humanist and satirist from Alsace. The book writing was inspired by a motive in medieval art and literature and in a religious satire, due to a pun on the Latin word 'navis', that means a boat and also the Nave of a church. The concept of foolishness was a frequently used trope in the pre-Reformation period to legitimate criticism (for example, it was used by Erasmus in his In Praise of Folly and by Martin Luther in his Address to the Christian Nobility). Court fools were allowed to say much what they wanted - by writing his work in the voice of the fool Brant could legitimate his criticism of the church. Ship... immediately became extremely popular, and had six authorised and seven pirated editions before 1521. Download links:
