Dub Landing 1 and 2 recalls the final days of dub glory at king Tubby's studio, before

computer circuitry spelled the death-knell for classical Jamaican dub.

Produced by Linval Thompson, mixed by Scientist and released in 1981, Dub Landing Volume 1 starts out deep in dub territory, with an

exceptionally powerful dub reformation of Al Campbell’s excellent ‘Unfaithful Children,’ here showcasing Scientist’s exceptional skills of

deconstruction and reconstruction, evidencing his credentials in Mixology. Other highlights include the return of Campbell’s dub ghost on an

excessive restructuring of his devotional ‘Jah Is My Light,’ followed by a percolating cut of Rod Taylor’s ‘Promised Land’ rhythm, seemingly with

contributions from another vocalist, while at the end of the original side one is a personal favourite: a chillingly captivating dub cut of ‘Hey

Stranger’ by the underrated Freddy McKay, showing Scientist’s masterful application of echo, which renders an infinite quality to the work, as well

as a general fearlessness when it comes to drastic mixing, moving elements of sound around spatially and applying hefty effects to all and sundry.

Also included is a bass-heavy, percussion-driven cut of Barry Brown’s ‘Natty Dread Nah Run,’ followed by a nice organ-led dub and a final track

peppered by African conga beats.

Volume 2, released in 1982 and featuring dubs from Scientist and Jammy, starts out strong with a typically elliptical dub of the Viceroy’s ‘I’m Trying

On,’ from their wonderful We Must Unite Album. Other highlights include a syncopated deconstruction of Anthony Johnson’s epic ‘Africa,’ with

some wonderfully reverberating vocal splicing dropping in to spice up the mix, a dub of the Viceroys’ ‘Rising The Strength Of Jah,’ which is

centred on throbbing bass and metallic snare, while another dub has Linval imploring us to get up off our lazy ways and try to be a better man

before we end up in the jailhouse, on a truly classic dub bearing all the hallmarks of Scientist at the controls, plus two alternate dubs of the

Viceroys’ ‘We Must Unite’ and a pertinent dub message from Freddy McKay.
