Every lover of Lieder must regret that Franz Schubert did not discover Heine until he was dying and composed only a few Heine songs in his Schwanengesang. But that regret is mitigated by the fact that Schumann gave so much attention to Heine during the brief, intense period when he was focused on songwriting. Dichterliebe is one of the finest song cycles in the German language - surpassed, if at all, only by Schubert's Schoene Muellerin and Winterreise; and the other songs in this collection are comparable in quality. The 'Liederkreis' and 'Dichterliebe' of Schumann offer many challenges to both singers and pianists. The texts are rich in symbolism, and can often be swallowed up by the intricacies of Schumann's musical settings. In this recording the talented English tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Julius Drake more than meet the challenge, turning out a highly satisfying disc. In addition to the two longer song cycles, the disc also contains seven separate songs spanning Schumann's lifetime, from the early "Abends am Strand" to the late "Mein Wagen rollet langsam," all sung with the same passion afforded the two larger song cycles.

Ian Bostridge started singing professionally later than most; he studied philosophy at Oxford and wrote his dissertation on witchcraft. Somehow, somewhere, music prevailed, and now the world has a performer of German lieder who will undoubtedly become a specialist in the genre. With a voice reminiscent of Peter Pears and with the intensity of baritone Jose Van Dam, Ian Bostridge proves that the art of the song is not dead. It is encouraging to hear a young singer take on this repertoire and make it sound so refreshing and distinctive.
