More Schlachtschiff 'Gneisenau' (Marine-Arsenal 002) By Siegfried Breyer Die längerfristigen Planungen der Reichsmarine hatten einen zukünftigen Bestand von fünf Panzerschiffen zum Ziel, jenes Typs, der unter den restriktiven Bedingungen des Versaüler Vertrages entstanden und im Ausland zunächst als "Westentaschen-Schlachtschiff belächelt worden war und erst im Nachhinein als ernstzunehmender Gegner erkannt wurde. Drei davon waren verwirklicht worden, nämlich die Panzerschiffe "A" (= DEUTSCHLAND), "B'' (= ADMIRAL SCHEER) und "C (= ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE). Bei ihnen hatte man von Schiff zu Schiff Verbesserungen eingebracht, welche eine stetige Zunahme des durch den Versaüler Vertrag gebotenen Limits von 10.000 ts (bezogen auf das Typdeplacement) um jeweils mehrere Hundert Tonnen bewirkte. Im Herbst 1932 begann innerhalb der Marine-Führungsspitze die Diskussion darüber, wie das Panzerschiff "D" aus- zusehen habe, dessen Inbaugabe nach dem derzeitigen Planungsstand für Herbst 1934 anstand. Admiral Raeder, damals Chef der Marineleitung, hatte schon bei dem dritten Panzerschiff ein Heraufgehen auf etwa 18.000 ts erwogen und zog solches jetzt auch für den kommenden Neubau in Betracht. Wenige Monate nach dem In-gangkommen dieser Diskussion kam es mit der Ernennung Hitlers zum Reichskanzler zum Machtwechsel im Deutschen Reich. Zu dieser Zeit hatten die Franzosen gerade ihr erstes Nachkriegs-Schlachtschiff, die DUNKERQUE, als 'Antwort' auf die deutschen Panzerschiffe auf Kiel gelegt; in diesem begann sich mit immer mehr Deutlichkeit deren zukünftiger Gegenspieler abzuzeichnen.
