Die Monographie gibt einen Überblick über die Geschichte des Herrscherlobs in Versen (der so genannten Panegyrischen Epik) vom 4. bis6. nachchristlichen Jahrhundert. Die Panegyrische Epik ist eine Literaturform, die erst in der Spätantike eine besondere Bedeutung gewinnt, die jedoch gleichwohl verschiedene literarische Traditionen der griechisch-römischen Antike aufnimmt und umgestaltet. In der Studie werden nach einem allgemeinen Abriss über die literarischen und historisch-kulturellen Voraussetzungen für die Entstehung des spätantiken Herrscherlobs die wichtigsten Repräsentanten und ihre Werke vorgestellt und die Entwicklung der Gattungstraditionen spätantiker Verspanegyrik nachgezeichnet.
