"Sauve Qui Peut (la Vie)", a pessimistic but visually stunning film, marks Jean-Luc Godard's return to cinema after having spent the 70s working in video.

The film presents a few days in the lives of three people: Paul Godard, a television producer; Denise Rimbaud, his co-worker and ex-girlfriend; and Isabelle Riviera, a prostitute whom Paul has used. Denise wants to break up with Paul and move to the country. Isabelle wants to work for herself instead of her pimp. Paul just wants to survive. Their stories intersect when Paul brings Denise to the country cottage he is trying to rent and Isabelle comes to see it without knowing that the landlord has been her client. The film is broken into segments entitled "The Imaginary," "Commerce," "Life," and "Music." Each of the first three sections focuses on one character and the last section brings all three characters together. This complex film is often closer to an essay than a story; it uses slow motion and experimental techniques to explore questions of love, work, and the nature of cinema. Sauve Qui Peut (la Vie) was Godard's first film with his frequent collaborator Anne-Marie Miéville, who edited and co-wrote the film.

Les angoisses et aspirations d'hommes et de femmes face à une société qui les broie dans un film superbe, étonnant et pessimiste. Ce film s'organise comme une partition musicale composée de quatre mouvements : l'imaginaire, la peur, le commerce, la musique.

Producteur de télévision, Paul est séparé de sa femme qui a la garde de leur fille, Cécile. Il les rencontre tous les mois. Il vit parfois avec sa maîtresse, Denise, mais leurs rapports sont plutôt tendus. Particulièrement en ce moment où Denise quitte son emploi à la télévision pour aller travailler dans une ferme au bord d'un lac dans la montagne. Elle a besoin de changer de cadre de vie mais elle ne s'imagine pas combien le jeu peut être violent. Son trajet s'intitule : "l'imaginaire". Celui de Paul Godard s'intitule : "la peur". Il a peur de quitter la grande ville où l'on est plusieurs à être seul. Il a peur d'être abandonné par Denise dont il n'arrive pas à suivre le mouvement. Les rapports entre Denise et Paul sont plus souvent violents, comme si deux être civilisés ne pouvaient se toucher qu'en échangeant des coups plutôt que des caresses. L'appartement qu'occupait Denise, c'est Isabelle qui désire le louer. Isabelle est une prostituée qui accepte généralement tout ce qu'on lui demande ; c'est plus simple. Le mouvement vécu par Isabelle s'intitule "Le commerce". Dans la dernière partie (appelée "La musique"), tous les fils sont tissés entre les trois personnages principaux. Un jour, Paul traverse la rue parce qu'il a aperçu sa femme et sa fille ; une voiture le renverse et bêtement, il se met à penser qu'il n'est pas en train de mourir...
