I've loved classical music for the better part of two decades now. It was fantastic to recently discover a composer of the first order, one who was completely unknown to me, and seemingly neglected by the larger canon. This is Sammartini. It's been fantastic to see more and more Sammartini compositions become available in mp3 format. I've devoured all the symphonies available, mainly through the Naxos label, though there are others. This opera must have just appeared. Otherwise I would have purchased it still earlier. The recording itself (technique, ambiance, etc.) is excellent and spacious. And I was surprised to hear just how many of Sammartini's various "symphonies" make their appearance in this one opera alone, either as introductory "sinfonia" or as support for vocal arrangements! That's no complaint. My one complaint (and it is one common to the mp3 format) is the absence of liner notes. In this case, that means there is no libretto for this opera. Best brush up on your Italian, folks. I'll be looking on-line for the libretto. In the meantime, and until further notice, I'll just assume that all this engaging music tells the story of Memet the Conqueror and the Ottoman's capture of Constantinople in the fifteenth century. I highly recommend this recording to anyone interested in opera of the 1700s, as well as Sammartini, that unsung hero in the development of symphonic form, the very man the great Joseph Haydn plundered.

If you are looking for other new Sammartini material, I also recommend Sammartini: Symphonies And Overtures. There are a few symphonies that do not appear in the various Naxos recordings, as well as fresh interpretations of the same. Although I have yet to digest it fully, I also recommend Sammartini: Sonatas for recorder and continuo, composed by Giuseppe, the brother of Giovanni Battista. Who can refuse brother Sammartini when offered by the incomparable Harmonia Mundi label? Although the recorder in this last album sits a bit to far above the rest of the instruments for my taste, this work should not be neglected either.
