Russell Malone - Playground (2004)

Jazz | Label: Max Jazz Records | Year: 2004

"You Should Know Better" begins the CD and reminds me of an earlier tune "Mugshot" off of the "Sweet Georgia Peach" CD. This is a great tune in its own left though and let's the listener know what they are in for. Malone's solo is infused with a heavy blues feel and if nothing else, you gotta hear his wicked vibrato and aggressive tone. This is a man who can get down and dirty, and sweet and tasty. He's obviously been influenced by a wide range of musical styles and his solos bring some of these influences into play. A great way to start this wonderful CD. (Jazz Guitar Life, Lyle Robinson)

Playground is basically a quartet date showcasing Malone’s working group with brief guest appearances by two highly accomplished and widely underrated artists, vibraphonist Joe Locke (“Sugar Buzz”) and alto saxophonist Gary Bartz (“Mandela”). Malone wrote six of the ten selections, including those two, and while I’ve nothing against Malone the guitarist/composer, the songs that most pleased my ear are the four that weren’t—Billy Strayhorn’s “Something to Live For,” Jerome Kern/Dorothy Fields’ “Remind Me,” Richard and Karen Carpenter’s “We’ve Only Just Begun” (set to a seductive Latin beat) and Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend.” Malone plays unaccompanied on “Friend,” as he does on “Remind Me,” showing in each instance that he needs no help whatever to weave a lustrous musical tapestry. In fact, without disparaging the contributions of pianist Martin Bejerano, bassist Tassili Bond or drummer E.J. Strickland, which are sizable, I wouldn’t have been displeased by an entire album of Malone’s solo guitar. Perhaps MaxJazz could consider doing that at some future date.

The Max Jazz label couldn't have picked a better artist to debut their String Series than guitarist Russell Malone. Malone's résumé already boasts high-profile gigs with Ray Brown, Branford Marsalis, and Diana Krall, plus recordings as a leader with Columbia and Verve. On this recording, his playing--with shades of George Benson, Grant Green, and Wes Montgomery--is clear and even-toned on old standards like Billy Strayhorn's evergreen ballad, "Something to Live For." But he can also change up the groove, as evidenced by his Latin take on the Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun." On unaccompanied readings of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" and the Jerome Kern/Dorothy Fields number "Remind Me," his solo sound evokes Joe Pass's intimate timbres. The CD also spotlights Malone's growing compositional chops, as evidenced by the live CD-ROM bonus track, "Mugshot," the hyper-bop diity "Sugar Buzz" (with vibraphonist Joe Locke), and the Coltrane-styled "Mandela," which features Gary Bartz on alto saxophone. (Eugene Holley, Jr.)

Malone has the honor of launching the Strings Series for MAXJAZZ with his label debut Playground (April 6, 2004), which features his working band of Martin Bejerano, piano; Tassili Bond, bass; E.J. Strickland, drums and guests Gary Bartz, saxophone; and Joe Locke, vibes. All arrangements are by Malone, who also produced the CD and wrote six of the ten tracks. (Amazon.com)

Russell Malone refuses to be pigeonholed into one category as a player, composer, or arranger on this outstanding CD, the first release led by a guitarist for the Maxjazz label. With a powerful group supporting, including pianist Martin Bejerano, bassist Tassili Bond, and drummer E.J. Strickland, Malone is clearly at the top of his game. "Blues for Mulgrew" is built from a fairly simple blues riff, though it explodes into a complex post-bop vehicle with Bejerano either following Malone or playing in unison with him in a piece that almost borders on avant-garde. Equally explosive is his well-named "Sugar Buzz," a rapid-fire piece that adds guest Joe Locke on vibes. The strutting "Mandela," which almost seems to chant the word "freedom," features the soulful alto sax of Gary Bartz. Malone's lyrical treatment of Billy Strayhorn's "Something to Live For" is a gem, as are his solo interpretations of the overlooked chestnut "Remind Me" and a sparse but compelling "You've Got a Friend." The Carpenters' huge hit "We've Only Just Begun" can come off hackneyed in the wrong hands, but Malone's arrangement picks up the tempo and frees the rhythm section from just plodding along behind him, while he adds a humorous lick from Burt Bacharach's "Say a Little Prayer." An added bonus is a live performance of Malone's "Mugshot," accessible only through a CD-ROM, though the poor lighting gives the video portion a homemade rather than a professional look. (Ken Dryden, AMG)
