Running Regal Geared Head Engine Lathe by The R.K Le Blond Machine Tool Co. Cincinnati, OHIO

More The Engine Lathe is the basic, fundamental tool of industry. Henry Maudslay's crude lathe of the late Eighteenth Century was the beginning of the world's most prosperous era, and it is still the basic machine of industrial manufacturing. Without it the present industrial era would not exist. Our luxuries and conveniences would be only a dream. It has made possible our various modes of transportation—steamships, electric and steam railways, automobiles and aeroplanes. Without lathes the production machines used for manufacturing these conveniences would not be possible. Practically every modern mechanical invention and improvement is developed through the use of engine lathes which produce the majority of the component parts of the new machine. In view of its importance to industry, and as a servant to mankind, it is remarkable that so few people know just what an engine lathe is, what it will do and how it is operated. To make this booklet as practical as possible, we have assigned one of our men, who has not only operated, but designed and built engine lathes for many years, to give you in plain language the benefit of his knowledge and experience on the subject. It is almost impossible to cover all phases of operation which might come up in connection with running a lathe; however, we are always glad to assist you in solving your individual problems if you will write us, giving complete details of what you are trying to accomplish. Running a Regal will be a valuable guide to the beginner. This manual will familiarize him with the various parts of a modern engine lathe, with procedure and operation, and with the kinds of work that can be performed on it. If this book is helpful, we will be more than compensated for its publication. If, in 1943, you bought a Regal geared head engine lathe (and you probably couldn't have since they were needed for war production), you would have gotten this instruction book with it. Yes, it's very much like How to Run a Lathe by South Bend Lathe, and Running an Engine Lathe by Fred "Mr Machine Shop" Colvin, or Care and Op of a Lathe by Sheldon Machine. But this book is just a bit different. You'll see much the same information. After all, engine lathes are all very much a like. But you'll get inside information on the special features that were put on the machines that left the LeBlond plant. You get basic info on setting up the lathe with levels, getting acquainted with parts, and the all the rest but you get photos and mechanical drawings of the headstock, reverse plate, quadrant, quick change mechanism, apron with power cross feed, and more. You get useful details on adjusting the spindle and lubrication. You'll find surprising detail in the chapters on necessary tooling like dogs, chucks, and the use of calipers. And you'll find all the usual essential lathe info, again in sufficient detail, such as grinding tools for chasing, cutting-off, boring, and turning. You'll learn how to use the compound rest, the follow rest, the grinding attachment, micrometers stops, milling attachment, steady rest, taper attachment and so on. You'll learn the essentials of cutting threads, mounting work on faceplates, in chucks, with angle plates and more. You get discussions on facing to length, filing, reaming, shoulder and radius forming, tapping, chasing threads, lapping, as well as tables of drill sizes, grinding fit tolerances, standard thread specs, cutting speeds and more. Like the other small lathe manuals we offer, this provides much the same information. But it also delivers it in its own special way, and that makes it different. And worth having. The R. K. LeBlond Machine Tool Co. CINCINNATI, OHIO March. 1943. 8th Edition.
