Righteous Jehu and his Evil Heirs: The Deuteronomist's Negative Perspective on Dynastic Succession

More David T. Lamb, "" (Oxford Theological Monographs) David T. Lamb examines not only the dynasty of Jehu within the narrative of 2 Kings, but also the broader context of the dynasties of Israel and Judah in the books of Kings and Samuel. Lamb discusses religious aspects of kingship (such as anointing, divine election, and prayer) in both the Old Testament and in the literature of the ancient Near East. He argues that the Deuteronomistic editor (Dtr), because of a deep concern that leaders be divinely chosen and obedient to Yahweh, sought to subvert the monarchical status quo by shaping the Jehuite narrative to emphasize that dynastic succession disastrously fails to produce righteous leaders. Dtr's negative perspective toward succession can be observed as he evaluates Jehu as righteous and his heirs as evil despite source material that could suggest the opposite conclusion. Jehu does not turn from Jeroboam's sins, yet he is the only northern ruler described as righteous. Dtr does not mention Jehu's connections to Omri and Shalmaneser III, sparing him association with an evil house and the ignominy of being an Assyrian vassal, and glosses over Jehu's territorial losses while highlighting his divine election, prophetic anointing, and zealous obedience. Dtr's pro-Jehu attitude is seen to be part of a broader pattern favouring charismatic ruler, such as David. Surprisingly, the ruler in the Deuteronomistic History who share the most positive similarities to David is not Hezekiah or Josiah, but Jehu. Lamb also explores Dtr's critique of Jehu's heirs. Dtr describes Jehoahaz, Jehoash, and Jeroboam II as evil, despite evidence such as their longevity, prophetic support, and military success. He concludes that Dtr's anti-dynastic perspective explains this negative attitude towards Jehu's successors. & 8220;RapidShare - http://rapidshare.com/files/118748612/Ri9h7s_J3hu_3vl_H3ir5.rar FileFactory - http://www.filefactory.com/file/b449f5/& 8221;
