I Righeira sono un gruppo musicale italiano formato da Michael, all'anagrafe Stefano Rota (Torino 1º ottobre 1961) e Johnson, Stefano Righi (Torino 9 settembre 1960). Al loro esordio infatti si fecero conoscere come Michael & Johnson Righeira. Michael e Johnson, come loro stessi spiegarono, erano i soprannomi che aveva dato loro il professore di educazione fisica delle superiori (probabilmente ispirandosi agli attori Don Johnson e Philip Michael Thomas della serie televisiva Miami Vice).

Venendo al sodo e descrivendo le canzoni contenute in questa pregevole raccolta del duo Righeira, sempre evitando una noiosa track by track, pongo l'attenzione sui pezzi più famosi del gruppo. "Vamos a La Playa" ('nnamo alla spiaggia), hit dell'estate '83, si distingue per lo scherzoso ed esotizzante utilizzo dello spagnolo - una novità per quei tempi - anticipando le tendenze di tanta musica latina. Il tutto su un tappeto sinth-pop che descrive, quasi come un allegra marcetta, l'esigenza di divertimento dei giovani dell'epoca... consistente proprio nella voglia di andare in spiaggia. Certamente superficiale, sia nei contenuti che nelle forme, il pezzo appare un po' il simbolo dell'epoca del disimpegno e del cazzeggio, che trova la sua epitome nella gioventù come stagione della vita e nell'estate come stagione dell'anno.

"No Tengo Dinero" (non c'ho 'na lira), hit del successivo inverno, replica un po' le trame ritmiche del singolo dell'estate, con un andamento moderato nelle strofe, ed esplosivo, quasi come un anthem da stadio, nel ritornello. Anche qui, ovviamente, torna l'uso dello spagnolo come lingua, da un lato, straniera - e quindi esca per l'esterofilia dei giovani -, dall'altro, facilmente intelligibile per gli italiani, e, dunque familiare ai più. In pratica anche chi non conosceva le lingue straniere con i Righeira poteva spacciarsi per esterofilo!

Negli anni '80 lo stile del duo evolve con la loro crescita umana e professionale, con l'abbandono di lessici stranieri a favore dell'italiano. I Righeira della maturità si ricordano, soprattutto, per pezzi come il celeberrimo "L'estate sta finendo" ('85) (Summer is over), in cui la descrizione dell'abbandono delle spiagge - chiasmico rispetto a "Vamos a La Playa" - cela, nemmeno troppo velatamente, la trita tematica dell'addio alla gioventù, luogo comune che francamente ricorre in poesie, romanzi, racconti e film... qui reso da melodie malinconiche. Un bel pezzo, al di là di tutto un interessante lascito degli anni '80, anche se sulla stessa linea di pensiero mi piace di più "Il mare d'inverno" di Ruggeri/Bertè.

Ultimo pezzo notevole della carriera di Michael e Johnson è "Innamoratissimo" ('86) (All in Love), presentato al festival di Sanremo senza grandi riscontri, per rifarsi poi ampiamente in termini di vendite come singolo. Allegro con brio, caratterizzato da break elettronici, il pezzo ha vaghi echi di "Video Killed Radio Star" dei Buggles ('80), almeno per quanto riguarda gli effetti melodici sottesi alla strofa. Il ritornello denota il solito climax con effetto anthemico: non male, ma forse ripetitivo.

Ultimo pezzo degno di nota, uscito nel '90, è il singolo "A ferragosto": bello per la melodia e per il solito ritornello martellante, il brano tradisce una certa ripetitività sia per quanto concerne le tematiche trattate - il divertimento agostano ed i riti estivi come al solito - sia per quanto concerne la struttura ritmico melodica. Segno che l'inventiva dei Righi, come li chiamano i fan, si andava inaridendo, quasi come preludio allo scioglimento dopo uno sfortunato album del '92.

Certo gli anni '90, con una musica giovanile ebbra del grunge e di un generale ritorno ad atmosfere pop-rcok, più che elettroniche, rendeva difficile la sopravvivenza del duo. Dei Righeira non si parla mai troppo, né troppo bene, anche perché i nostri non amano il revival ed hanno sempre preferito, anche negli anni di lontananza dalle scene, atmosfere elettroniche d'avanguardia come l'house, operando talvolta come dj o produttori. Talvolta si tende a liquidarli come un gruppettino qualsiasi, ma le loro canzoni, lo dico soprattutto per gli under 25, hanno davvero segnato un'epoca, e molti dei nostri cugini o fratelli maggiori, anche se lo negano, si sono avvicinati alla musica comprando magari i loro singoli. Per quanto non credo vadano dimenticati né snobbati, anche se della loro carriera possiamo salvare solo una manciata di pezzi.

The Italian Righeira are a band formed by Michael Stefano Rota actual official name (Torino 1 October 1961) and Johnson, Stefano Righi (Turin, September 9, 1960). On their debut it became known as Michael Johnson & Righeira. Michael Johnson, as they themselves explained, were the nicknames he had given them the professor of physical education in high school (probably inspired by actors Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas Miami Vice television series).

Coming to the point and describing the songs contained in this valuable collection of the duo Righeira, always avoiding a boring track by track, I put attention on the most famous pieces of the group. "Vamos a La Playa ('nnamo the beach), summer '83 hit, is distinguished by the playful use of Spanish and exoticizing - a novelty in those days - anticipating the trends of such Latin music. All on a carpet-pop sinth describes, almost like a gay march, the need for fun young age ... consistent in their desire to go to the beach. Certainly surface, both in content and form, the piece seems a bit 'the symbol of the disengagement and cazzeggiano, which finds its epitome in the youth as the summer season of life and how the year.

"No Tengo Dinero" (I've got no 'na lira), hit next winter, a little replica' rhythmic textures of each summer, with a moderate path in the verses, and explosive, almost like a stadium anthem, in the chorus. Even here, of course, back the use of Spanish language, on the one hand, foreign - and then go out for anything foreign young people - the other, easily intelligible to the Italians, and thus familiar to most. In practice, even those who did not know foreign languages with Righeira could impersonate xenophilous!

In the '80s style of the duo with their evolving personal and professional growth, with the departure of foreign vocabulary in favor of Italian. I remember Righeira of maturity, especially for pieces like the famous "Summer is ending" ('85) (Summer Is Over), in which the description of the abandonment of the beaches - chiasmico than "Vamos a La Playa" - hides, not too subtly, the hackneyed theme of farewell to youth, which frankly cliche used in poems, novels, short stories and films ... here rendered by melancholy melodies. A nice piece, beyond all an interesting legacy of the 80s, although on the same line of thinking I like the most "Winter sea" Ruggeri / Berta.

Last significant piece of the career of Michael Johnson is "in love" ('86) (All in Love), presented at the Sanremo festival without great feedback, then to refer broadly in terms of sales as a single. Allegro con brio, featuring electronic breaks, the piece has vague echoes of "Video Killed Radio Star" by Buggles ('80), at least for the effects underlying melodic verse. Denotes the chorus climaxes with the usual effect anthem: not bad, but perhaps repetitive.

Last piece of note, released in '90, is the single "In mid-August" looking for the melody and the usual pounding chorus, the song betrays a degree of repetition both in the themes - August fun and rites Summer as usual - both in the rhythmic melodic structure. Sign that the inventive lines, as they call them fans, it was drying up, almost as a prelude to the dissolution after an unfortunate album of '92.

Sure the 90s, with a drunken youth music of grunge and a general return to the pop-rcok atmosphere, rather than electronic, made it difficult for the survival of the duo. Righeira of you never speak too much and not too well, because our dislike the revival and have always preferred, even in years away from the scene, as the avant-garde electronica house, sometimes acting as a DJ or producer. Sometimes we tend to dismiss them as a gruppettino any, but their songs, I say especially for those under 25, have really defined an era, and many of our older brothers or cousins, though they deny it, have come close to buying music maybe their singles. As I do not think should be snubbed or forgotten, even if their careers can save only a handful of coins.
