Richard Strauss : Der Rosenkavalier (film music, 1926) - Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin - Marek Janowski

He is known particularly for his operas, Lieder, and tone poems. Strauss, along with Gustav Mahler, represents the extraordinary late flowering of German Romanticism after Richard Wagner. Der Rosenkavalier (Op. 59) (The Knight of the Rose) is a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is loosely adapted from the novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas by Louvet de Couvrai and Molière’s comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac. It was first performed at the Königliches Opernhaus in Dresden on 26 January 1911 under the direction of Max Reinhardt. So popular was Der Rosenkavalier that Strauss made several concert versions of numbers from the work and, in 1944, produced, with the assistance of the Polish conductor Artur Rodziński, the Rosenkavalier Suite. The Movie (Austria release: December 10, 1925 ; German and Usa releases: January 10, 1926): Film director Robert Weine, who headed the Pan-Film AG in Austria, was called in to realize the project of a film from the Strauss opera. Wiene's most successful work, The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari (1919-20), is among the Expressionist film classics. The screenplay was written by the director Wiene, the librettist von Hofmansthal and Louis Nerz. Strauss arranged his score to a complete orchestral score; because the film plot contained scenes not in the opera, the composer had to find or compose several extra numbers to insert into the film music. He completed the score in October 1925. The new items were "Militärmarsch" in F major and the "Königsmarsch" in E flat major which follow on directly, the battle music "Kampf und Sieg" at the beginning of the second part and the whirling "Wirbeltanz", a Strauss orchestration of a Couperin dance. Only the military march was especially composed in 1925 for the film. The Rosenkavalier film music is a curiosity, a charming travesty of the original, a paradoxical opera without libretto or song. The film premiere formed part of the Dresden Strauss Festival and took place at the Dresden Staatsoper on January 10, 1926; Richard Strauss himself conducted the orchestra. ----------------------- Track List: Richard Strauss (1864-1949) Der Rosenkavalier (Le chevalier à la rose, film music, 1926) Cd 1 (72'54") [1] Prelude (9'02") [2] A rider on the way to Lerchenau (2'04") [3] Ochs awakes (3'33") [4] Hurdy-gurdy in the courtyard (2'49") [5] With the Marschallin (1'09") [6] The Marschallin's dream (1'59") [7] The Field Marshall enters her life (0'19") [8] Presentation March (1'04") [9] Marschallin and Octavian / Ochs' arrival (4'14") [10] Entrance of Ochs (4'34") [11] Levée (morning audience) (4'45") [12] Discovery of the supposed lover (4'46") [13] The morals committee (1'59") [14] March in F major, King's March in E major (5'09") [15] Scene in the Prater (1'06") [16] Blind man's bluff / Entry of the Marschallin (6'49") [17] The Day of the Knight of the Rose / In Faninal's house (4'50") [18] Delivery of the silver rose (6'32") [19] Appearance of Ochs / Scene with the notaries (2'31") [20] Octavian and Sophie (3'05") [21] Quarrel in front of the Palace (0'36") Cd 2 (73'47") [1] Notary and Ochs / Ochs dances (1'26") [2] Ecco!
