More This posthumous volume contains all of Richard Montague's papers that were felt to have application to philosophical and linguistic problems. Over the period between the 1955 lecture that appears below as Chapter 1 and his last paper, Chapter 8, written in 1970, Montague's views on language developed into a comprehensive framework for the semiotic study of natural languages such as English. This introduction is confined to the papers that develop this program and provide a mature statement of it, Chapters 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.3 Its purpose is to show in some detail how Montague adapted metamathematical materials for application to the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic study of natural languages.
