Things have come along way since the days that the doom metal faithful could only dream of a return of the classic line up of Revelation with John Brenner on guitar and vocals, Bert Hall on bass and Steve Branagan on drums. Release marked a fine return to form last year, and earlier this year saw the decades overdue release of the S/T album that was to have preceded Salvation’s Answer. In addition the same line up has been active as Against Nature since 2005 and has released…wait for it….11 albums under that name! One could not be faulted for wondering with that level of quantity was quality suffering, was the magic being diluted? I think not, Against Nature is its own separate entity, served by the same musicians as Revelation, but on a different path, one where pent up creativity and spontaneity dance and fuck and drop musical progeny like Mormon farmers with fields to reap. Release showed in no uncertain terms that Revelation is very much at full stride and in full possession of their near mythical powers, and For the Sake of No One shows them not only to be avoiding dilution or regression, but progressing in craftsmanship and purity.

“Offset” pretty much lays it all down for you left up front. Pure doom riffs dripping from the speakers, give way to searing solos. During both rhythm and lead sections you can nearly smell the heat coming off of the amplifier heads…this is indeed the sound of smoking tubes. The bass work is both solid and adventurous often in juxtaposition to the guitar, contrary to normal instrument roles and working very, very well. The drums thud and pound in an uncomplicated and perfectly restrained fashion that serves the doom rather than eclipsing it. The vocals are a blue collar, down to earth style clarion call of doom and the lyrics expressive, free, open and brimming with sadness and doubt. “A Matter of Days” kicks in and you have to ask yourself…does doom metal get any more pure than this? Magnificently done, this could have easily and comfortably sat in with their early material and yet shows just a bit more confidence and maturity. “Canyons” shows why Revelation has occasionally been referred to as the Rush of doom. Its offbeat, but intelligent, musicality and the tossing overboard of the doom rule book indeed bring to mind a doom version of that Canadian trio’s hard rock head-fucks back in their glory days. The extended jam fronted by Mr. Brenner’s passionate soloing that constitutes most of this song is not to be missed.

“On A Promontory” reminds all that Revelation have long been a part of the DC scene and are not only no strangers to the more upbeat, rockin’ kind of doom associated with those parts, but one of the best at conjuring its particular magic. “The Whisper Stream” has the DC area and Rush tendencies colliding headlong in a sonic stew of heady tastiness. “Vigil” heads back to the land of ultra pure doom metal, one more in a long line of affirmations that musically and lyrically Revelation are masters of this craft. The guitar screams, bleeds and weeps, the bass stalks, surrounds and blankets while the drums punctuate and accent. Add haunting melody, thoughtful arrangement and mournful vocals and you are there, doom metal of high caliber. The title track brings it all to a close with yet another crushing avalanche of pure doom gold; this one encompassing every good thing shown by the previous tracks, easily bearing the burden of representation inherent to a title track.

Buy this, put on your headphones or crank it up really loud (this is either produced or mastered at a pretty quiet level), shut the rest of the world out and indulge in this. You will be rewarded, Revelation never disappoint. By Mike Ballue
