Petty (Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison) has written this book with accessibility for undergraduates in mind. He has tried to illustrate why certain information is important and to link concepts to everyday experience. The first part of the book is designed to be read in sequence, leaving the later chapters for more specialized readers. Each chapter starts with a brief summary of what was learned from the previous chapter and how that links to the next topic. After describing each new concept, its application to meteorology, climatology, and remote sensing is given. The book should therefore make a good course resource, allowing students to build up their knowledge. Problems are provided in each section (but, sadly, no solutions). This book should be most useful for graduates and undergraduates pursuing meteorology, climatology, and remote sensing; its structure makes it most useful as a course resource rather than as a reference book. The illustrations are clear but perhaps do not reflect how useful and exciting the topic is. A welcome addition to meteorological works in this field, this book should be found in all university libraries. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty.
