This judicious, useful and unpretentious study is essentially concerned with the early sixteenth century. On the one hand, D'Amico (like other scholars in the last few years) argues against the idea that Renaissance Romans were 'pagan'. On the other, he is concerned to show that Roman humanism was no mere copy of the Florentine product but adapted to the local milieu. To make his case he adopts two rather different approaches. In the first part of the book, the author studies the social origins of humanists and the employment opportunities available for them at the papal court, while the second part is concerned with 'humanist theology' and with the description and analysis of texts. The two approaches are united by a concentration on three individuals, Adriano Castellesi, Paolo Cortesi and Raffaele Maffei. All three were employed at the papal court and interested in both classical and theological studies. Castellesi attacked a theology based on human reason, but went on to write a history of the Latin language in which Cicero was the hero. Cortesi rewrote the Sentences of the medieval theologian Peter Lombard in ciceronian Latin, calling churches 'temples' and Aquinas 'the Apollo of the Christians' (D'Amico compares this 'classicising of religious topics' with contemporary paintings by Raphael). Maffei tried to made a synthesis between the ideas of the fathers of the church, closer to the classical tradition, and those of Aquinas, 'our leader' ....
