Proceedings of RILEM TC-PRC third conference on this subject. Papers from road authorities, engineers, researchers, contractors and manufacturers discussing the implementation and the long term behaviour of overlay systems. The following topics are covered: prevention and cracking assessment, choice and design of overlay systems, practical implementation, case histories and long term performance.

Crack reflection through a road structure is one of the main causes of premature pavement deterioration. This phenomenon, which often appears when a layer of aspbaltic material is placed on top of a discontinuous base, can have many different aspects, in accordance with the large number of factors governing the mechanism of crack initiation and propagation through a road structure.

At a time when the preservation of the road network and adapting it to an increasingly aggressive traffic are absolute priorities, all the professional circles concerned - road authorities, manufacturers of materials, designers, contractors, researchers - are expected to show their innovativeness by suggesting appropriate ways to take up this challenge. In this perspective, the RILEM Technical Committee 97-GCR "Application of Geotextiles to Crack Prevention in Roads u was set up under the chairmanship of Professor J.M. Rigo.

Two RILEM Conferences on Reflective Cracking in Pavements, RC89 and RC93. were organized by this committee and the University of Liege in 1989 and 1993, respectively. These events have demonstrated that many innovative systems are now commonly implemented, and the proceedings of these conferences remain unmatched sources of information on the reflective cracking issue:

RC89 has pointed out the main factors and mechanisms involved in the initiation and propagation of cracks. A first inventory of systems and approaches available to prevent cracking was presented. At the RC93 Conference emphasis was on the theoretical and experimental research required in order to optimize solutions. The foundations were laid for a classification of products and overlay systems with the aim of setting up a procedure for selection and design.

The RILEM Technical Committee 157-PRC "Systems to Prevem Reflective Cracking in Pavements" was formed in 1993 with a broader field of tasks; not only does it deal with geotextiles and relal products, but it also covers other innovative materials and technical solutions involved in the prevention of crack reflection such as:

* preventive measures to be taken in new construction projects,

* repair and rehabilitation work to be carried out prior to the application of an interlayer,

* practical problems during laying and construction, the long-term performance of overlay systems.

The main objective of the RILEM Technical Committee 157-PRC in organizing this Third Conference is to gather the information needed to finalize a state-of-the-an report on the prevention of reflective cracking in pavements.

As an heir of the two former conferences, and after sufficient time has elapsed to look back and evaluate the first applications, the RC96 Conference of Maastricht will pay particular attention to full-scale performance verifications and practical field experience.

Fifty-eight papers have been selected covering the five major topics of the Conference:

* Origin and prevention of reflective cracking.

* Resistance to cracking of asphalt overlays.

* Test methods for interlayers.

* Theoretical and practical aspects of design methods.

* Performance of maintenance techniques.

The number and quality of the contributions proposed at this Conference proves the on-going interest of professionals in innovating rehabilitation techniques and maintenance procedures aiming at longer service lives and cost-effective solutions.
