The name Red Circuit may still be unknown, yet there are a number of top musicians in this band. Eye-catchers are the Sri Lanka born singer Chity Sompala ((ex-Avalon, ex-Firewind) and keyboard player Markus Teske. The last one earns some words of explanation, because he wrote the songs and got some help from Vanden Plas singer Andy Kuntz. Together they were responsible for the production too. So it is not that surprising that there are some similarities with Vanden Plas. Markus Teske himself is a famous producer. He sat behind the mixing table with renowned artists such as Neal Morse, Symphony X, Mob Rules, Weissglut, Ian Parry’s Consortium Project and, oh surprise, Vanden Plas.

The new injection that was given to the progressive rock genre in the early nineties still seems to be working. Many bands are added to the rich scene but it is my personal view that a band must excel by a certain distinctive factor. That is what is appealing to the progfans. Be it a unique singer, a flashy keyboard player or a wacky drummer (fill in the appropriate names yourself).

Red Circuit certainly has everything going for themselves; a good sound with all positions strongly vacated. But that distinctive factor isn't really there or guitarist Oliver Noerdilinger must be the one with his heavy riffs. Have I become that grumpy old progrocker? I don't think so because I hear enough new music that surprises me. Is it th·t mediocre, the music of Red Circuits' 'Trance State'? Yes and no, based on the musical perfromances and abilities in for instance 'So Hard To Be Like God', 'Search For Your Soul' and the title track 'Trance State' they score a good grade. But I don't detect that extra element that challenges me and that is something that I like in my prog. The same goes for a band like Threshold, I think Red Circuit have a lot in common with that band. Singer Chity Sompala is blessed with a slight rougher voice than his English colleague but musically they are in the same street. In other words; Threshold fans really should check this album out.
