Synopsis : Les aventures d'un jeune highlander, bercé par les légendes de son pays, sur fond de guerre civile anglaise. Davey, un jeune berger highlander un peu réveur, voit sa vie basculer lorsqu'il croise le regard d'une belle aristocrate. Le coeur enflammé, il escalade les parois du chateau pour déclarer sa flamme à la dame. Mais celle ci le dénonce pour le plaisir de voir son mari lui donner la chasse. Davey, contraint à l'exil, rejoint le clan Mac Ivor, qui s'est engagé dans la lutte pour le trône qui s'engage entre Stuart et le roi d'Angleterre. Les batailles succèdent aux escarmouches, et bientôt c'est toute l'Ecosse qui est à feu et à sang.

La grande confrontation entre les deux armées tourne à l'avantage du roi et les représailles sont lancées sur les hautes terres. Davey parvient à se sauver avec sa jeune bergère en se sauvant chez les red caps, lutins sanguinaires, qui disait on, peuplaient les hauteurs et trempaient leur bérets dans le sang de leurs victimes pour raviver leur couleur.
