Ray Crawford was born and raised in Pittsburgh. His first musical ambitions centered on making a name for himself as a saxophonist and in 1941 he took a saxophone chair with the Fletcher Henderson band - doubling on the rarely heard alto clarinet.

During his spell with Fletcher, Ray contracted tuberculosis and was forced to leave the band subsequently spending two years in a sanitorium. This ended his career as a saxophonist and resulted in him learning to play guitar.

This album was his chance as a leader, his first album under his own name. He worked furiously on the arrangements and assembled the musicians he knew could read and could play left away (Johnny Coles on trumpet, Cecil Payne on baritone sax, Junior Mance on piano, Ben Tucker on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums). After just one rehearsal the date was made in February 1961.

After the date Ray went back home and sat around in California for months waiting for it to be released. Sadly the label closed down shortly thereafter and only re-emerged on Candid decades later.

In retrospect it seems incredible that a musician of such talent and sensitivity should not have been awarded greater recognition and exposed to a wider international audience all these years.

Guitarist Ray Crawford, born in Pittsburgh in 1924, began his career playing tenor sax and clarinet. While living in Pittsburgh, he started a group with Art Blakey. He performed with Fletcher Henderson from 1941 to 1943. Struck by tubercolos he was forced to give up woodwinds. He switched to guitar and become a key member of Ahmad Jamal's early trios from 1949 through 1955. With Jamal he was noted for his percussive bongo-like guitar sound that was adopted by Herb Ellis. After his stint with Jamal, Crawford recorded with Gil Evans in 1959 and 1960. Settling in LA in the 60's he drove around in a converted ice cream truck andbecame an avid tennis player. From 1958 through the '80's Crawford recorded and toured with Jummy Smith. During his career he also recorded with Tom Waits, Lou Rawls, Curtis Amy, Richard 'Goorve Holmes, and more. Crawford also had several solo releases including: Smooth Groove (1961) and Doubletimes (2003). He died on Dec. 30, 1997 in Pittsburgh.
