Some called it cowpunk. Others didn't know what to make of it. In the early '80s, as new wave was taking hold, another sound emerged from the underground. With punk resumes and an ear for Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Merle Haggard, Rank And File forged an explosive hybrid that would later become known as alt-country.

As members of The Dils, Chip and Tony Kinman spent the late '70s shaping the sound of L.A. punk. Even then they refused to be confined by a scene. While their contemporaries were hard at work on the hard-and-fast, The Dils toyed with different approaches: long songs, slow songs, even acoustic guitars. The Kinman brothers became increasingly disinterested in what was emerging as hardcore, and opted for a change of direction. Tony took some time off, while Chip moved to New York to start a band with Alejandro Escovedo. Tony eventually joined his brother, and the three soon moved to Austin in search of an audience for their country leanings.

An opening slot for The Blasters helped Rank And File get signed to Slash Records. They released their debut album, the masterful Sundown, in 1982. A bold blend of Bakersfield attitude and punk nihilism, the record caught the ear of Los Angeles Times critic Robert Hillburn, whose review gave Rank And File some real visibility. After a successful tour, Escovedo left the band, and for their next batch of recordings The Kinmans worked with session musicians. The resulting Long Gone Dead is even more of a nod to the lonesome strains of classic country.

Slash's deal with Warner Bros. and the consequent corporate shuffle meant three years of delays before Rank And File's final studio effort would see light on another label. Notable for its new rock direction, 1987's Rank And File didn't quite match the creative heights of the band's Slash albums.

The Slash Years contains 23 tracks, all remastered from original source tapes. Sundown and Long Gone Dead appear in their entirety, as well as three songs recorded during the Sundown sessions (two previously unissued) and a latter-period live version of "White Lightning."

Having since released two traditional country albums as Cowboy Nation, the Kinman brothers continue to record.

The Slash Years is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 2,500 copies.
