The Heteroptera, or true bugs, are the largest and most diverse group of insects with incomplete metamorphosis. They are generaly treated as a suborder of the Hemiptera, and a majority of the 75 families occur in all continents (except Antactica) and on many islands. Their great age and apparentl adaptability have resulted, over evolutionary time, in extreme structural and biologicalñ diversity.

The present volume was conceived as a way of providing a general summary of what is currently known about the Heteroptera, offering an introduction to the group in chapters that cover the history of its study, a review of the major workers, techniques and sources of specimens, attributes of general biological interest, selected taxa of economic importance, and basic morphology. The main bulk of the book presents the current classification of the Heteroptera with diagnosis, keys, figures and general natural history information to each family. The book ends with a glossary.
