More This book is about radioactive gases and particles dispersed in the environment, either from natural causes or following nuclear tests and accidental emissions. The first five chapters of the book describe the formation and properties of radioactive aerosols. Radon, which is of natural origin, is treated at some length, because of its significant contribution to the background radiation dose and its importance as a current health concern. Chapters on the release of fission products, tritium and plutonium in bomb tests and nuclear accidents are described. Particular reference is made to the pathways taken via agricultural products to humans. The emphasis then changes to cover experimental aspects of radioactive aerosols. For example, problems in micrometerology, the study of mass transfer, the mechanics of the human lung and uptake of lead from motor exhausts.
