Um Austauschphänomene dieser Art zu erfassen, wird der Blick auch auf die Wirtschaftssysteme insgesamt gelenkt, deren Gesetzmäßigkeiten und Rahmenbedingungen beschrieben und definiert werden. Dabei werden Impulse von außen, Transformationen und kulturelle Wechselwirkungen sowie die generelle Bedeutung des interkulturellen Kontakts näher beleuchtet.

In diesem Zusammenhang wird sowohl die geographische Dimension, d. h. der Einfluß auf 'Nachbarkulturen', thematisiert, als auch die chronologische Dimension, d. h. Voraussetzungen und Weiterentwicklungen innerhalb eines spezifischen kulturellen Milieus, behandelt, ebenso auch allgemein Themenbereiche, die mit Fragen des Kulturtransfers und Kulturaustauschs sowie des von Babylonien und Assyrien ausgehenden kulturellen und zivilisatorischen Erbes verbunden sind.
