& 8220; “Don't get me wrong, this Tosca is very good. Milnes is no Gobbi, but he's still fantastic in this recording (he's even better in the famous RCA recording with Price and Domingo). Pavarotti is just wonderful as Cavarodossi. His voice may lack the power for the role, but the colors in his voice are phenomenal. He even overshadows Domingo and Carreras in this role. The only disapointment was in E leuceven le stelle. He doesn't give a heartbreaking performance of this aria, and he sings it with little emotion, but who cares? Freni is so-so. Sure, she is no Callas, and this role doesn't really suit her voice so well. But she still handles this part well enough, and has a more than exceptable top. Overall, even though this is a very good Tosca, it doesn't have the fire or the brilliance of the famous Tosca recordings with Price or Callas. For Freni, I personally reccomend her later recording with DG which also has Domingo and Ramey. She is much better in that recording, and even comes close to Callas's magic and fire. Milnes is also a lot better in the RCA recording with Price and Domingo. But if you want Pavarotti in his peak, this is certainly one recording to own.
