More Prokofiev - Alexander Nevsky / Lieutenant Kijé / Scythian Suite - London and Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Claudio Abbado Classical | Label : Deutsche Grammophon "The Originals" | Release : 1995 Abbado must rank as amongst the finest of modern Prokofiev interpreters, alongside Neeme Järvi and Andre Previn. His Chicago recording of Lieutenant Kijé is wonderfully characterful and splendidly played. There is a good sense of fun and the Chicago Symphony plays with a delicious lightness and delicacy. It makes a splendid foil for the more serious cantata. The Battle on the ice segment is powerful and full of pungency, with orchestral playing of the highest order. But while the showy elements of the work come off very well with bite and panache, it is the intense and emotionally-charged lament that must be most impressive. Obraztsova is an artist with a very good feel for the raw emotions for the piece, and she sings most effectively and beautifully, with a poignancy and deep tragic feeling to blow all other competitors out of the water. The late analogue recording must be one of the finest to have emerged from the DG engineers, and this disc is a must for all admirers of Abbado and Prokofiev.
