More t This book deals with the measurement of instantaneous velocity by laser Doppler methods. A historical review of laser Doppler anemometry is given, its relationship to other optical techniques is examined, and principles of geometrical, physical, and quantum optics are outlined. Light scattering is analyzed, the optical measurement of particle velocity is explained physically, and principles of laser Doppler anemometry are introduced. Optical arrangements for velocity measurement are described, the transform equation for a laser Doppler anemometer is derived, and principles underlying the definition of the measuring control volume are set forth. Practical criteria for specifying optical components are provided, and techniques are discussed for changing the frequency of light beams as well as for removing the pedestal signal. Electronic arrangements for processing the Doppler signal are examined along with various signal-processing techniques. Frequency analysis, frequency-tracking demodulation, and counting procedures are considered in detail together with the specification, generation, and measurement of scattering particles. Designs of laser Doppler anemometers for specific requirements are presented, and previous investigations with such anemometers are appraised.
