Knowledge about infectious diseases has undergone an extraordinary expansion during the years between publication of the fifth edition of this book, and this, the sixth one. During that time, previously unrecognized infections have emerged, and awareness of the role of microbes as potential agents of terrorism has been heightened. The population of patients whose host defenses are compromised by underlying diseases or by medical treatments continues to increase, and this has resulted in increasingly complex and challenging infections.

In those years, important new advancements were made in the development of highly sensitive and specific diagnostic techniques, in antimicrobial therapy, in vaccines, and in appreciation of public health control measures against the spread of infectious diseases.

This new edition has attempted to capture this explosion of new knowledge in an authoritative, complete, yet readable and readily accessible text. Every chapter has been revised, and many new chapters have been added since the last edition. Examples of the latter include chapters on SARS, metapneumovirus, Nipah and Hendra viruses, uncommon fungi, bioterrorism agents, and hospital preparedness for emerging and highly contagious infections. New color figures and revised tables have been added throughout, which will facilitate use of the book.
