Praxis for the Poor: Piven and Cloward and the Future of Social Science in Social Welfare

This wonderfully lucid, well-developed volume should perhaps have been called Suggested Praxis for the Poor, since, instead of describing the current state of welfare, the author argues for a revamped praxis that would rescue our failing programs. Schram (social work & research, Bryn Mawr Coll.; Words of Welfare: The Poverty of Social Science and the Social Science of Poverty) suggests a return to the traditions of social scientists Frances Fox Piven and Richard A. Cloward. Piven and Cloward produced numerous books and articles, including Poor People's Movements (1971), and their collaboration epitomized the combination of welfare scholarship and politics. In the "Piven and Cloward legacy," welfare policy is informed by theories and research developed by scholar/activists, unlike today, when the main players in the field are think-tank members and other cogs in the wheels of the "politics of blandness" eager to be politically correct. Schram analyzes the methods of Piven and Cloward, arguing that a welfare praxis based on the interplay of theory and practice would improve the programs that exist today. Highly recommended for special and large research libraries.
