More Label: Brilliant | cat. no. 94031 Yes, I know the title says “2010”, and many of us had a lengthy discussion about posting current-year-releases, but this one is hardly new. It’s Brilliant’s repackage from a 4cd set previously released on Decca. Added to this set are the Symphony No. 6 in B minor, "Pathétique," the Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello and orchestra, the Orchestral Suite No. 3, and the Orchestral Suite No. 4, "Mozartiana,".
I couldn’t let this go when I saw it in the shop; for the powerful combination Ansermet and Decca its price was so low as to be downright offensive. I’d blush to mention it, so I won’t.
Hardly new and at a bargain, but that doesn’t make it less good. As soon as I’d listened to it I hurried to search the board for other Ansemet collections I might have missed – and found one.
Here is an athlete among conductors! The controlled strength and crystal clear sound of Ansermet’s performances are perfectly suited to my taste of how orchestral works should be played.
