This can be read elsewhere, of course, in a variety of editions and translations; but here, for the first time in any language, the play has become part of a Philoctetes omnibus with the following specific innovations: 1. A Collection of nearly all surviving allusions to Philoctetes from Homer to the ninth century a.d. A coheretе arrangement and comments are supplied. 2. An account of the fortunes of the Philoctetes legends from the Renaissance to our own century. 3. The beginnings of a Philoctetes iconography for that same period. 4.
