The fifth title in the New York Times best-selling saga of civil war and chaos in the darkest part of the Forgotten Realms setting.

This latest title expands the civil upheaval among the drow, one of the most popular races in the Forgotten Realms setting. Best-selling author R.A. Salvatore wrote the prologue to Annihilation and continues to consult on the series, lending his expertise as the author who brought drow society to the forefront of the Forgotten Realms setting.

Progresses the primary storyline nicely, a good set up for the final book

Phillip Athens does a fine job of continuing the epic story in the War of the Spider Queen. The primary storyline of the drow party searching for the silent Lloth is done particularly well here. Major progressions take place, with the party finally reaching the Abyss and certainly not finding what they expected. This whole storyline gives the series new breath, with Realm-changing events taking place and being revealed for the first time. The more disappointing aspect of this book is the drawn out and overdone battle between Gromph and the lich drow. It seemed like half the book (thankfully dispersed throughout) was taken up by this battle. Overall though, this book was up to par for the series and sets the stage for an exciting final book.

As for those who just noticed the personality shifts in some of the characters in this book, if you look for closely you'll realize that we've been seeing hints of this happening in the last three books. Obviously, the changing personalities of the characters (particularly Quenthel, Phaurun, Hallistra, and Danifae) is a major part of the series' plot. We don't yet understand what exactly is causing Quenthel to act so differently, but I'm sure it will be revealed in the final book.

Personally, I look forward to reading that final book, and recommend this one if you've enjoyed the rest of the series.
