Scholarly assessment of Jewish communities in the Hellenistic and Graeco-Roman Diaspora has generally been dominated by our knowledge of the large and influential communities in Rome and Alexandria. This is the first study to bring together the evidence for significant Jewish communities in another part of the Diaspora, namely Asia Minor. By collating archaeological, epigraphic, classical, New Testament and patristic sources, the author is able to put forward an invaluable and coherent description of the life of Jewish communities in Asia Minor, and so provides a more complete account of Jewish life in this period than has been available hitherto.

After examining the literary evidence, Dr Trebilco discusses the significant Jewish communities at Sardis, Priene, Acmonia and Apamea. This is followed by a discussion of themes that emerge from the evidence, which include the prominence of women in Asia Minor, the issues of' Theos Hypsistos' inscriptions and Sabazios worship, and the interaction between the Jewish communities and the Greek cities of Asia Minor.

In the view of the author, the strength, vitality and diversity of Jewish communities at this time comes across clearly. And despite close relations with the wider pagan society, such relations did not mean the abandonment of an active attachment to Jewish traditions; it was fully as Jews that the communities participated in the activities of the cities in which they lived.
