José, maudit par son père, doit quitter Haïti par un cargo en partance pour Panama, avec comme seule richesse une poignée de piments que la pauvre Marguerite lui a remis juste avant son départ. Haïti, années 1880. José, qui a été maudit par son père, embarque à bord d’un cargo en partance pour Panama, où Ferdinand de Lesseps creuse le célèbre Canal. Pour toute richesse, il a une poignée de piments. A Colon, il rencontre « Président » que les gendarmes exécutent, l’accusant de mener la révolte des ouvriers. José part alors retrouver la famille de cet homme. Sa femme vient de mettre au monde Rose. Les années passent. La petite tribu survit grâce à une plantation de piments. Mais José, qui a épousé Rose, est assassiné devant son fils Manuel. Pour vaincre la malédiction, Rose décide de partir et de fonder ailleurs un village qu’elle baptisera « José Pobre ». Bien que prospère, ce village reste maudit et compte ses morts. Ainsi Manuel meurt accidentellement, laissant un fils, Tonio. Rose, qu’on appelle désormais « l’Abuela » – l’aïeule –, décide que cet enfant deviendra le chef du village et voudrait l’envoyer à l’école à Colon. Mais ses plans seront contrecarrés par l’arrivée de Shelena, une fille qui sait « parler au vent et aux oiseaux »… Tonio restera avec Shelena, apprendra à vivre en osmose avec la nature et deviendra pêcheur.
