It's rare to find a band in the early two-thousand-teens to still be practicing the ancient art of synth-pop. Even rarer is finding a band that does it well, so well that it doesn't sound dated. Toronto's Parallels are this kind of band. Formed by vocalist Holly Dobson, keyboardist Joey Kehoe and ex-Crystal Castles drummer Cam Findlay, Parallels' first full length is a wonder to hear for anyone raised in the 80s. The music is minimal enough, driven by simple drums and a strobing, solid synth line, and, the final element needed for any good synth-pop act, a strong vocalist, which Dobson brings with seemingly little effort. The music ranges from the simple love-song (“Counterparts”, “City of Stars”) and the dark and atmospheric (the soaring “Dry Blood”, probably the best track on the album, “Nightmares”, “Midnight Voices”). The bands sound is evocative of 80s acts like early Human League, Ultravox (there's a song called “Vienna” on the album, but it's not a cover of the Ultravox classic) or the more poppy end of Kraftwerk, or a more modern band like The Knife or Royksopp. The spastic pace set by Findlay's former band is all but absent here. Instead, Parallels take a different and retro take on electronics that sounds fresh and familiar at the same time. Excellent album!
