The casting of Christel Goltz, from the Vienna State Opera, for the title-role was indeed ideal. Like Hermann Uhde (also from Vienna), the splendid Creon of this and the Salzburg première, she possesses the secret of ecstacy, which is not intoxication but reverie and alertness, frenzy and sobriety, madness and sense all in one. The conductor Georg Solti fascinatingly sculpted the grandiose rhythmic structure of the whole, but his musicians did not always succeed in transforming their instrumentation into the magically spiritual sound that alone would be adequate to Hölderlin's language. However, the intellectual impulse emanating from the conductor's desk was felt everywhere, particularly in the powerful choruses, in whose extreme demands on declamation and intoning the chorus of the State Opera increasingly rose to the occasion from performance to performance. -K.
