More The Hebrew Bible/Old Testament—like the whole Bible to which the Oxford theologian Benjamin Jowett (1817-93) refers in the statement above, 1 used here as an epigraph not only for this first chapter but for the consecutive ones as well—seems to stand in a continual conflict of interests. This situation is not without relation to the double character which the 'book itself apparently has, in its interpretative position and its ecclesiastical, practical use. In a way, the reception of the book is Janus-faced, which again may correspond to the difference between the book's historical genesis and its first use as Scripture.
