In Nov. 1987, a three-concert Ed Blackwell Festival was held in Atlanta. The festival served as a good excuse to reunite the members of Old And New Dreams (trumpeter Don Cherry, tenor-saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Blackwell), a quartet comprised of Ornette Coleman alumni. The unit interprets three rarely-performed Ornette Coleman compositions and a tune apiece by Blackwell and Redman. All of the musicians are in top form on this no-changes music, creating fresh and intuitive melodies with both freedom and hints of the tradition. (Source: cdandlp.com)

Much as VSOP celebrated the golden age of mid-'60s Miles Davis, Old And New Dreams evoked the classic sound of the great Ornette Coleman Quintet circa 1970, when the original quartet was supplemented by the innovative Texas tenor Dewey Redman. Needless to say, neither Miles nor Ornette showed up for their celebration, but Coleman's unique style of freedom swing thoroughly animates these proceedings.

Everyone plays with the spirit of a drummer on A TRIBUTE TO BLACKWELL, an affectionate nod to the innovative percussionist, whose high-stepping beats, stunning textures and African-styled polyrhythms gave the best performances of Coleman and Don Cherry their wit, form and elemental thrust. When this live 1990 date was recorded, drummer Blackwell was living on borrowed time--he'd been undergoing kidney dialysis for twenty years. But you'd hardly know it from the emotional intensity of his parade rhythms on the free-rolling "Happy House" or the visceral swing of "Law Years", where his rounded resonant sound, timbral subtlety and melodic interplay transforms each solo into an event.
