I really cannot come to terms with some of the negative comments about this book. OK, if you don't like it, that's fine but some of the comments here have been little short of vitriolic and I do think they go a bit too far. Trouble comes, I think, in that the fantasy genre tends to elicit more polarised responses than most, perhaps given its nature, which can encompass, well, just about anything really. That, I think, is its beauty, and just to 'slag off' a writer who doesn't deliver 'your' kind of fantasy seems a bit unfair to me. Some still like goblins, elves and magic;some like lots of gore and bad language, it goes on. I liked '' and feel it's a welcome addition; I look forward to the sequel. That's not to say it's perfect [hence my 4*] but as a new step by a new author, I feel it's very very promising. There are problems here, yes, but to brand it as 'poor writing' is extremely misplaced in my view. I have no truck with poor writing in whatever genre I read and have been known to throw some books to the other end of the garden in disgust!!!! But that's not the case here. I do think there are times when better editing would have improved things. There are times when he's overdone the ornate vocabulary to the extent that 'difficult' words aren't always used properly but that's a very minor niggle which I would think most young writers would overcome. There is an obvious tribute to 'Gormenghast' here - perhaps you need to be a veteran of that tome to really appreciate it [?] but there are other touches - I liked the allusion to the 'Shelley' tanks which was very understated and there's even a mild bit of Othello. It's also fair to criticise too many things going on that aren't properly resolved but then aren't many of Shakespeare's plays guilty of that? OK, before I'm criticised for comparing Newton with all-time-greats, all I'm saying is that I liked this novel;it's got a lot going for it, despite some of its flaws and yes, I'll be around for the sequel. For my money there's a lot of sub-par stuff around in fantasy at the moment but this isn't one of them.
