Thus, the rifle remained for many years a weapon mainly for wealthy sportsmen and game shooters, It is thought that a few rifles, then called "screwed guns", were used as sniper-type arms during the English Civil Wars (1642-51). but probably the first to make wide use of rifled arms were the frontiersmen of North America, who relied on game-shooting for food and other necessities.
