Preface

This book provides a systematic examination of the neural basis of consciousness,

taking as its thesis that consciousness is not a unitary function of the

brain. To fully understand consciousness, therefore, we require examination of

the concept of neural basis of conscious mind.

Recent advances in cognitive neurosciencemade in consciousness research

now make possible an understanding of the neural events that are associated

with the different forms of consciousness. The book discusses the major issues

related to neural basis of consciousness, the mechanisms of the different

varieties of consciousness.

Research investigating the neural basis of consciousness has become a more

influential stream now in 2002 as compared to 1998, when this book was conceived.

It has taken several years to collect and keep up-to-date the chapters

in this volume. I gratefully acknowledge continuing support from Professor

Maxim I. Stamenov, series editor of the Advances in Consciousness Research,

for his comments and suggestions. I also express my deepest thanks to the

contributors of each chapter for updating the manuscript during the editorial

processes.

One of the contributors, Sir John C. Eccles (who was a Nobel Prize Laurente

in 1963) passed away on May 2nd, 1997 in Locarno, Switzerland, after

submitting the chapter with Professor Beck. We regret his death and would

like to express our thanks to his great contribution to modern consciousness

research.
