Andrew Burgess on Nov 16th 2010 with 7 comments

Recently, I thought Id try my hand at creating a simple CSS selector engine. Today, Ill show you how to create a really simple one!

How to Create a Config Variables Loader in CodeIgniter: New Premium Tutorial

Daniel Balfour on Nov 9th 2010 with 22 comments

If youve been using CodeIgniter or another MVC framework for any length of time, youve probably started to realize the advantage of abstracting data and logic from presentation. But efficiency is not without its drawbacks, and, in the case of CodeIgniter, one of these drawbacks is the need to constantly bounce variables out of your controllers so that they are available within your views.

In this tutorial, Ill show you a really cool way to eliminate this hassle. Become a Premium member to gain access to this tutorial, as well as hundreds of other tutorial, screencasts, and freebies from the Tuts+ network.

Jeffrey Way on Nov 9th 2010 with 19 comments

In todays tutorial, were going to mix a handful of technologies. First, well review how to implement a simple form of text file caching with PHP. To illustrate this technique, well use the wonderful YQL to query Twitters search API for a list of tweets which contain the string, nettuts. Finally, well experiment with PHPs regular expression capabilities, and will turn all Twitter usernames and urls into clickable links.

Port the Best Vim Commands to your Favorite Text Editor

Jeffrey Way on Oct 29th 2010 with 22 comments

Im sure everyone can agree that the power and control afforded by a program like Vim is incredible. However, understandably, many arent comfortable with the various modes, and the command-line feel of it. Its hard to compete, visually speaking, with a beautiful UI, like Espresso. But, what if we could take some of the more popular Vim commands/shortcuts, and manually port them over for use in Espresso? Wouldnt that be the best of both worlds?

Jeffrey Way on Aug 18th 2010 with 12 comments

If youve ever used a piece of software, like Picasa or iPhoto before, youll be aware of the fact that there is a slider at the bottom, which allows you to specify how large each photo should be. Move the slider up a few ticks, and all the photos will zoom in a bit. Thanks to the HTML5 and the new range input, we can mimic this effect rather easily. Along the way, well also learn about a variety of awesome new CSS3 features, including transition, nth-child, rotations, scaling, and more.
