More Neandertal Code Genre: Documentaire Pour la première fois, des scientifiques commencent à décoder le génome de l'homme de Neandertal. Leurs découvertes initiales laissent entrevoir une nouvelle théorie : cet hominidé primitif aujourd'hui disparu aurait bien plus de points communs avec nous qu'on ne le pense... De Leipzig au Connecticut, ce documentaire livre le fruit des dernières recherches, sous forme d'enquête et de scènes de reconstitution. Grotte de Vindija, Croatie : un anthropologue retrouve un fragment d'os de la jambe d'un homme mort, là, il y a 38 000 ans. Il contient une quantité dix fois plus importante d'ADN que n'importe quel autre échantillon aussi ancien. On l'appellera dorénavant le V 80. Cette source unique d'informations va permettre pour la première fois de décrypter le code génétique de l'homme de Neandertal. Une chance d'en savoir plus sur cette espèce humaine qui a régné sur le continent européen pendant deux cent mille ans, puis a disparu mystérieusement. L'homme de Neandertal a-t-il été décimé par l'Homo sapiens venu d'Afrique il y a 40 000 ans ? Ou n'a-t-il pas su résister à la domination de cet être supérieur ? Jusqu'à présent, l'image communément répandue de l'homme de Neandertal était celle d'un être inférieur et cannibale, plus petit, plus robuste mais moins intelligent que l'Homo sapiens. Sa physionomie se caractérisait par des arcades sourcilières proéminentes, un nez très épaté et un cerveau plus gros d'environ 10 %. Ses capacités cognitives semblaient bien moins développées que celles de nos ancêtres, l'Homo sapiens se différenciant au contraire par ses aptitudes à la créativité et à une pensée symbolique. Les secrets de Neandertal L'homme de Neandertal a-t-il été décimé par l'Homo sapiens ? Or, plusieurs études ont commencé à faire apparaître un esprit néandertalien bien plus complexe qu'on n'imaginait. Ainsi, en Dordogne, on a découvert que l'homme de Neandertal réalisait des peintures rituelles et fabriquait des bifaces de conception très élaborée. Autant d'éléments qui contribuent à renforcer la théorie des anthropologues qui considèrent que les hommes modernes ne sont pas si différents des néandertaliens. L'analyse du V 80 semble leur donner raison. A Sachem Head, dans le Connecticut, la nouvelle méthode de séquençage de l'ADN, inventée par Jonathan Rothberg, a permis d'accélérer les techniques traditionnelles de décryptage. Cet homme d'affaires spécialisé en biotechnologie a imaginé un procédé cent fois plus rapide que les autres, qui va permettre de soumettre l'échantillon néandertalien du V 80 à la puissance de ses ordinateurs. Pendant l'été 2006, le lancement du Neandertal Genome Project a laissé entrevoir pour la première fois la possibilité d'un séquençage complet du génome de l'homme de Neandertal. Premiers résultats et première surprise avec la découverte de la présence du gène Fox P2 : celui de la parole. Selon Johannes Krause, de l'institut Max-Plancke, à Leipzig : « C'était un des principaux gènes qui différenciaient l'homme moderne de Neandertal. Or il semblerait maintenant que ce dernier, tout comme nous, avait peut-être un langage. » Pour John Hawks, de l'université du Wisconsin, cela s'explique par le fait que leur survie dépendait de leur capacité à chasser en groupe et donc à communiquer entre eux. Un accouplement possible entre Neandertal et Sapiens ? La découverte d'autres gènes communs soulève aujourd'hui la question de l'hybridation. Est-il possible que des accouplements aient eu lieu entre les deux espèces ? Probablement, affirment certains scientifiques, d'autant plus que la possibilité d'une descendance viable et fertile est réelle entre deux espèces de mammifères qui ont évolué différemment pendant moins de deux millions d'années. Ce qui expliquerait d'une certaine manière la diversité de notre population, héritière d'un métissage de caractéristiques variées.
