More Nathaniel Hawthorne 'The Scarlet Letter' In this classic tale of pride and guilt, Hester Prynn, a young woman in Puritan Massachusetts, publicly bears the burden of her sin of adultery by wearing a scarlet A embroidered on her dress. Set in an early New England colony, the novel shows the consequences that a single act has on the lives of three members of the community: the independent and defiant Hester Prynn; her guilt-ravaged lover Reverend Dimmesdale; and the obsessed Chillingworth - Hester Prynn's husband who, once presumed dead, now returns to exact revenge. Hailed by Henry James as "the finest piece of imaginative writing yet put forth in the country," Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER is a masterful portrayal of humanity's continuing struggle with sin, guilt and pride.
