More Mozart: DON GIOVANNI. The FURTWANGLER / Czinner, August 1954, Salzburg film (Siepi;Della Casa;Grummer;Edelmann) This is the arch-famous Furtwangler, August 1954, Don Giovanni film, from the Salzburg festival. Ailing Kappelmeister, who was about to die in 3 months -and quite unexpectedly, as he had been sceptical about anything technical all his life - was persuaded to let his performances be filmed by Paul Czinner. 1954 Gionanni was the 3rd reprise of this 1950 Herbert Graf revival production under Furtwangler and Elvira was sung, as in the 1950 and 1953 performances, by Elisabeth Schwartzkopf. Unfortunately, because of a technical bogus or exclusivities in contracts, her scenes could not be used, so less glamorous but brilliant, nevertheless, Lisa Della Casa was flown in to re-shoot Elvira's scenes. Gossip has it that these Della Casa sessions were not conducted by Furt himself, but, frankly, there is absolutely nothing "unfurtwanglerian" whatsoever in any part of this interpretation. The cast is a gathering of eagles at their very best, and even if there's little "giocoso" in Furtwangler's conception of the drama, his Giovanni has hardly been surpassed as far as deepness, emotion, structure and musical analysis are concearned. AND YES, in CESARE SIEPI we hold the sexiest Don ever! Good mono sound and period color image as restored in this, latest, edition of this unmissable, absolute classic of recodred music's history, make the pleasure even more intense.
