Mozart: DIE ENTFUHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL; Frick;Rothenberger;Gedda;Popp;Unger; JOSEF KRIPS

Josef Krips (1902-1974) was one of the many austrian musicians who were forced to leave their country after the Nazi takeover, in 1938. Exiled in Yougoslavia, he conducted there until nazi invasion of the Balkans and then vanished in a tin factory to save his life. He resumed his carrer in Austria, including Salzuburg, as soon as 1945 to become one of the most respected Mozart conductors of his era. His Don Giovanni recording (with Della Casa and Siepi) is a benchmark recording and this Serail is admirable throughout: Krips is an "equipe" maestro, never flashy, yet always serious, precise, helpfull to his singers, stylish and prerfecty studied in his tempos. In this 1965 recording, all these qualities are patent and his cast almost ideal: Rothenberger is a soft, girlish Konstanze, lacking, perhaps, the aplomb of others but very touching and musical. Frick puts in shame all other Osmins, Gedda is luminous and funny and young Popp in Blonde shows even there why she became such a major mozartian singer. Krips leads his team with his usuall precision and loving care for unity and style. IMO, one of the most enjoying "classic" versions of this delightfull Mozart "turcheria".
