Following the success of Climbing! and appearances at Woodstock and other outdoor festivals of the day, Mountain recorded more of the same for Nantucket Sleighride. The title track is a nice mixture of classical-leaning intertwined with moderate rock; both "Don't Look Around" and "The Animal Trainer and the Toad" continue on the hard rock path so well-worn by this band. Not groundbreaking, but it is well worth listening to.[The 2003 reissue on Columbia/Legacy adds a live version of "Travellin' in the Dark (To E.M.P.)" as a bonus track.]

Mountain's Nantucket Sleighride was probably the New York-based, metallic quartet's most ambitious album. As on the earlier disc, Sleighride placed front and left the titanic, multi-tracked guitar and raw-throated vocals of Leslie West (b. Leslie Weinstein, 1945), while producer Felix Pappalardi (1939-1983), who was also the groups co-lead vocalist, expanded Mountain's sound without compromising their hard-rock identity. Released in 1971, the LP reached number 16 on Billboards Album Chart and, like its predecessor, went gold.

Sleighride's centerpiece is its title track, which at once tells an epic whaling tale, sung beautifully by Pappalardi, and takes the listener on a thrill-packed "Nantucket Sleighride" on the open ocean. "The Animal Trainer And The Toad," co-authored by West, is humorously autobiographical, and two takes of "Travellin' In The Dark" — one in the studio, the other an unreleased live bonus track — are fine examples of early American gothic rock.

This expanded edition of Nantucket Sleighride wails as never before thanks to a 24-bit digital remaster, as well as West and drummer Corky Laing's personal and perceptive reminiscences of the recording sessions and the events that shaped them.
