Mikis Theodorakis - Epitaph & Epiphany (2011)

Mikis Theodorakis - Epitaph & Epiphany (2011)

Genre: World | Ethnic /Greek ballads, bouzouki | Label: EMI

Two great poets, an inspired composer and two cycles of songs. Yiannis Ritsos and the Nobelist Giorgos Seferis, asked Mikis Theodorakis to write music on their poetry. The result was this beautiful album that remained forever in the musical history of Greece and the hearts of its people. The song "At the secret seashore" (Sto perigiali to krifo), at track 09, can earn the title of the most sung tune in Greece. In the first 12 songs, the singer is Grigoris Bithikotsis, while at the last 8 sings Mary Linda. Maybe the most popular album of Theodorakis.

The first cycle with the name "Epitaph" includes 8 songs written on the poetry of Yiannis Ritsos. Theodorakis decided to record these songs in an arrangement for only a voice and just one bouzouki player. He chosed the voice of Grigoris Bithikotsis, a singer with a great potential, already proved in previous albums of Theodorakis, and he confided the bouzouki part to the hands of Manolis Hiotis, the most talented Greek bouzouki player of all times. To give an idea of Hiotis artistry, when the great Jimmy Hendrix heard him play in one of his visits at the US, he was very moved and said: "This man is born to be a music master... And I thaught I was quick in my solos!".

Theodorakis' controversial decision, was accepted with enthusiasm by the greek people, who adopted these songs immediately, despite the sophisticate lyrics of Ritsos' poetry. Bithikotsis and Hiotis were speaking directly to their hearts. Theodorakis added to the same album, a second recording of Epitaph, this time arranged for an orchestra, with the fresh voice of Mary Linda accompanied by her hasbund's, Manolis Hiotis, bouzouki and voice. The last part of the album (8 trascks) is the Epitaph cycle, with this new arrangement. Equivalent in beauty with the first recording.

Tracks 9-12, constitute the second cycle of songs, named "Epiphany" (Epifania), on the poetry of Nobelist Giorgos Seferis. Again with only Bothikotsis and Hiotis. These songs gave the opportunity to Bithikotsis to express a touching lyricism with amazing control of his wonderful voice. And the first of them, "The secret seashore" became an anthem, being on the lips of every greek till today.
