The publication of this book so soon after my Marine Microbial Ecology is an indication of the rate of progress of the study of marine microbes. It is also an indication of world interest in the oceans as a source of food and other requirements for a world with an exploding human population, and the realization that the microbes and their behaviour control the food web in the ocean. I have endeavoured to consider the taxonomy and nutrition of marine microorganisms in more detail than I did in my previous book, and have reverted to an earlier interest that I had in the economic implications in marine microbiology. These, as well as the role of microbes in the food web of the seas, are of great importance to humanity, and their effects will increase as we turn more and more to the oceans for our subsistence.
