Pianist Michael Chertock’s unique approach to programming and his sensitive performance style make him a favorite soloist among conductors around the world. He made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in August 2001 and performed Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at the Ravinia Festival the following September. His numerous orchestral appearances have included concerto performances with the Montreal Symphony, the Boston Pops, the Toronto Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Utah Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Oregon Symphony, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the Sofia Philharmonic, the San Diego Symphony, the Columbus Symphony, and the Naples Philharmonic. Mr. Chertock has performed Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla-symphonie with the Aspen Festival Orchestra under the direction of James Conlon and with the Cincinnati Symphony to rave reviews. He has toured Asia and Florida as soloist with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. In 2005 he performed the world premiere of Tod Machover’s concerto for hyper-piano and orchestra, Jeux Deux, in Boston’s Symphony Hall. His most recent Boston Pops appearances were in June 2008. He made the debut recording and performed the world premiere of Roger Davis’s Piano Concerto in F with the Sofia Philharmonic in 2006 and 2007, respectively; the recording received glowing reviews from Fanfare and American Record Guide. He and Frank Weinstock gave the acclaimed world premiere performance of Jonathan Kramer’s piece for two pianos and percussion, Notta Sonata. In 1994 he released Cinematic Piano, his first Telarc CD, a collection of piano music from movies, which has sold more than 30,000 units worldwide. He has since released three additional Telarc recordings. Michael Chertock joined the piano faculty of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 1998 after teaching two years at Ohio’s prestigious Miami University where he worked in the piano department with Dr. Robert Thomas. Mr. Chertock was appointed assistant professor at CCM in 2004, and chair of the piano department in 2008. He has an award-winning studio of international undergraduate and graduate pianists. In 2009, the CCM piano department was presented in a special segment on CBS Sunday Morning after becoming an all-Steinway institution. In 2002 Michael Chertock was appointed conductor of the Blue Ash/Montgomery Symphony, a professional orchestra in suburban Cincinnati. Together, Chertock and BAMSO have presented over fifty diverse concerts featuring numerous world premieres. He has also conducted the Columbus Symphony and the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra. He lives in Cincinnati with his wife Maaike, three children, and four cats.
